Lorenzo Lovelock was stabbed in an alleyway at the rear of his home in Hereward Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock on 4 September 1959.

A 51-year-old bookshop manager was tried for his murder but acquitted.

The prosecution said that Lorenzo Lovelock had, in a 'drunken condition and fighting mood' drawn a knife and stabbed the bookshop manager in the forehead after which the bookshop manager was said to have chased Lorenzo Lovelock through the streets.

When the bookshop manager was charged with Lorenzo Lovelock's murder, he said, 'You are going to charge me with the murder of this man who hurt his foot when he broke my window and could not run up the road? I didn't even know he was dead'.

Lorenzo Lovelock's body was found by a labourer that lived in Hereward Street at about 6.20am on Sunday 7 August 1960.
